The shop
A bright floor in a quiet prefecture city
POPS KAWAKAMI, K.K. opened in 2023 at 2-3-18 Higashiyama, Yamaguchi 753-0041. The address is a few minutes from the castle streets, not inside a mall. Stock is chosen slowly, then set up on a bench a few rooms from the sales floor.
The company runs as a Japanese specialist retailer rather than as a warehouse with a guitar aisle. One wall holds acoustic and electronic instruments. A second bay is reserved for mixers, monitors, and microphones. A quieter shelf carries printed scores, art books, and Japanese vinyl that is hard to find outside the prefecture. Sporting goods and hobby inventory sit in the last bay.
Service is written in Japanese shop language: measure twice, pack once, name the person who signed the certificate. Neon on the ceiling is the public face; the work is the feeler gauge, the invoice, and the hold slip for a scarce pressing.

01 Hand setup in Yamaguchi
Every guitar, bass, and electronic keyboard sold for playing is checked on the Higashiyama bench before it is boxed. Relief, action, intonation, and electronics are written on a setup slip that travels with the instrument. If a neck needs more time, the sale waits — the shop does not ship an unplayed truss rod.
02 Authenticity on paper
Rare vinyl, art books, and sporting goods that the shop treats as collectible leave with a written authenticity certificate signed at the counter. The sheet names the item, the date, and the shop: POPS KAWAKAMI, K.K., 2-3-18 Higashiyama. It is a store document, not a third-party grading slab.
03 Holds on Japanese releases
Scarce Japanese pressings, score reprints, and short-run books can be reserved under a named hold. The desk logs the title, the edition when known, and a contact. A hold is not a pre-order from a warehouse; it is a promise to call when that copy reaches Yamaguchi.
04 Packed for export
International shipping is a listed service, not an afterthought. Instruments go in flight cases or double-wall cartons with neck support. Vinyl is packed flat with corner protection. Sporting goods are taped to survive a long belt. The invoice lists contents in English for customs.

Acoustic and electronic instruments
The north wall is the instrument floor: acoustic guitars, electrics, basses, and compact keyboards. Student kits include a cable, strap, and stand when the model is sold that way. Intermediate pieces are chosen for necks that can be set up on the in-house bench, not for poster finishes.
Electronic instruments are tested through a shop amp or a small interface before they leave. If a pickup is noisy or a keybed is uneven, the unit stays on the bench. Trade-ins are discussed at the counter; there is no published buy-list.

Sound and studio equipment
The second bay stocks mixers, nearfield monitors, microphones, stands, and interface kits for rooms that are not yet studios. Cables are sold by length, not as a mystery bundle. The staff will sketch a three-piece recording chain — microphone, interface, headphones — on paper if you bring room dimensions.
Live-sound pieces are aimed at school halls, shrines, and small clubs in Yamaguchi Prefecture. A full line-array install is outside the shop’s scale; a pair of powered speakers and a mixer is inside it.

Scores, art books, and collectibles
Printed music arrives through Japanese publishers: method books, ensemble parts, and piano reductions. Art books sit on the same quiet shelf — drawing, photography, and design catalogues that share a reader with the score customers.
Collectible vinyl and small objects are ticketed individually. If a pressing is treated as rare, it does not leave without the authenticity certificate. Holds for titles not yet on the shelf are taken at the desk, not through a public cart.

Sport and hobby retail
The last bay is sporting goods and hobby inventory: rackets, gloves, shoes, helmets, and craft supplies. It is a genuine retail counter, not a corner of leftover boxes. Families who come for a first guitar often leave with a racket for the same child.
Collectible sport equipment — signed bats, limited shoes when the shop has them — follows the same certificate rule as vinyl. Ordinary training gear is sold as training gear, without ceremony.

Bench setup, holds, and shipping
Pre-sale setup and later service for instruments bought here are booked by phone or the form below. A typical first setup covers relief, nut, action, intonation, and a string change if the set on the instrument is tired. Electronic servicing is limited to pots, jacks, and basic diagnosis; a full rebuild is referred out.
The rare-release hold program and international shipping sit on the same desk. Name the title, the destination country, and whether the piece needs a certificate. Packing is quoted after the item is on the bench, not before.

Play and measure
The instrument comes off the wall. Relief is checked with a feeler gauge, strings are sighted, electronics are plugged in. Anything that fails stays in Yamaguchi.

Set and write
Action and intonation are set to the player’s note when one exists, or to a shop standard when the buyer is remote. The slip records dates and measurements.

Certificate if needed
Collectible vinyl, books, and sport pieces get the authenticity sheet. Ordinary instruments get the setup slip. Both are shop documents with the Higashiyama address.

Pack and dispatch
Domestic parcels go through the usual Japanese carriers. Export cartons are doubled, necks supported, customs lines written in English. Tracking is mailed from [email protected].

POPS KAWAKAMI, K.K. issues a signed shop certificate for rare vinyl, selected art books, and collectible sporting goods. The sheet is printed at the counter, not generated by a grading company. It names the object, the date, and 2-3-18 Higashiyama, Yamaguchi 753-0041.
Ask for the certificate at the time of sale. A later request is possible only if the item is still in the shop’s records and has not left Japan through a third party.

Rare Japanese release holds
Short-run Japanese vinyl, score reprints, and books that never stay on the shelf can be reserved under your name. The hold log needs a title, an edition note if you have one, and a phone or email that actually rings in your time zone.
When the copy arrives in Yamaguchi, the shop calls once. If there is no reply, the hold is released to the next name on that title. There is no public queue to browse.

Do you ship outside Japan?
Yes. International packing is a listed service. Costs depend on weight, the destination country, and whether the piece is an instrument, vinyl, or sporting goods. Write the country on the form; a quote follows after the item is measured.
Can you hold a title that is not in the shop yet?
Yes, through the rare Japanese release program. Send the exact title and, if you know it, the catalogue number. A hold is a named reservation, not a paid pre-order, until the copy is in Higashiyama and you confirm.
Is setup included with every instrument?
Instruments sold for playing receive a pre-sale setup on the Yamaguchi bench. Display pieces sold as décor can skip the setup if you ask in writing. Later adjustments for instruments bought here are booked separately.
What does the authenticity certificate cover?
It is a shop statement for rare vinyl, selected books, and collectible sport equipment sold here. It is not a grading score and not a warranty from the manufacturer. Keep it with the parcel documents if the piece is leaving Japan.
